At The Shoe Clinic we provide premium solutions to help you prolong the life of your footwear, ultimately saving you money as well as reducing the number of shoes that are thrown into landfill each year.

Instructions

Step 1: Preparation

Clean and prepare the leather shoes with a good quality leather cleaner, such as The Shoe Clinic Leather Cleaner. Soak the abrasive pad in water and rub over the surface to prepare the leather. Some colour may come off - this is normal and helps the dye absorb evenly. Focus on creased or cracked areas. On older or scuffed shoes, lightly sand rough areas with 1200-grit wet & dry sandpaper. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust, then allow to dry completely before dyeing.

Step 2: Colouring

Shake the bottle well. Apply a small amount of paint to the sponge and rub into the leather in circular motions for even coverage. Allow to dry (a hairdryer can help). Apply a second thin coat the same way, then for the third coat, dab the sponge onto the surface instead of rubbing - this step is key for an even finish. If changing the colour, apply more coats as needed. Lightly sand between fully dried coats with 1200-grit sandpaper for a smoother finish.

Directions for Satin, Fabric or Canvas

Step 1: Preparation

The Shoe Dye can be used on any absorbent fabric. Test the material for absorbency before applying. Clean with a specialist fabric cleaner, then wipe with a damp cloth to remove residue and leave to partially dry.

Step 2: Colouring

Dilute 1 part dye to 1.5 parts water (e.g. 50ml dye to 75ml water) and stir well. Apply with a sponge, rubbing evenly over the fabric. Allow to dry, then apply a second coat if needed for an even finish. For best results, stuff shoes with paper to remove creases, use a small brush for details, and a hairdryer (15cm away) for speed drying.

FAQs

No, we don't recommend using this product to dye suede as it will change the texture.

The bottle contains a thick cream liquid, we recommend shaking the bottle thoroughly before use to ensure an even colour.

It is not necessary to use a finish, however if you want a more robust topcoat on leather shoes you could apply our Leather Finish which comes in a choice of matt, satin or gloss.
